You need to take a valid hunting permit with you at all times to legally hunt on land managed by DOC.
You can apply here for a hunting permit to recreationally hunt pigs, chamois, tahr, wallaby, goats and deer in open hunting areas.
When applying you will need to give personal details of the hunter and then select each area in which you expect to hunt over the next four months.

Auckland Reserves Kauri die back hygiene applies to all Kauri Forests in this area. Clean boots before and after hunting to prevent kauri die back. For hunting in the Mangatawhiri hunting block, please contact John Rice at Dilworth School on +64 9 236 2000 and private landowner Tim Detmar on +64 27 448 5342 to advise them you have a hunting permit and when you will be hunting in the area. In addition, please avoid hunting on the ridgeline closest to Dilworth School.

Coromandel Reserves Use of dogs requires avian aversion training and is restricted to certain areas. Conservation Code and Water Code apply to all hunting areas. North Waikato Reserves For hunting in Hakarimata Scenic Reserve and Hapuakohe Range (Matahuru and Mangapiko Valley Scenic Reserves) up to 2 dogs allowed on this permit - max. 3 per party. Before hunting in the Hangawera Conservation Area, Patersons Lagoon, Patetonga Lake Wildlife Management Reserve or Colebaker, Te Puroa and Te Karaka Memorial Scenic Reserves you must notify neighbouring landowners.

Northland Reserves Applicants should get in touch with the Kauri Coast Office for confirmation. Maximum of 3 dogs allowed with this permit. All dogs used for hunting must have current Kiwi aversion training certificates. Conservation Code and Water Code apply to all hunting areas. Kauri die back hygiene applies to all Kauri Forests in this area - contact your local DOC Area Office for details or call 0800NZKAURI. No hunting allowed in Tangihua Forest within 300m of Horokaka repeater, 500m of Lions Lodge or lower Pikiwahine Valley. For access to Tangihua Forest from Tangihua Rd contact Whangarei Area Office. For access to Te Paki (West of State Highway 1) contact the Te Paki Farm Manager. Absolutely no vehicle access permitted on Pirau and Mokau Ridge Roads Puketi Forest. For access to Te Karae, Manganuiowae & Pareokawa contact the landowner. No access to Otaika Valley via Winstone's Quarry unless they give permission. Warawara Forest will be closed from September 1 2015 until further notice for pest control purposes, contact Kaitaia Office for details.

Cardrona Glenorchy Shotover This permit is not valid from 22 March to 22 April for the Cardrona area (Balloted ROAR block). A separate permit for aircraft access is required if not using an authorised operator. Hunting dogs are allowed in Glenorchy and Cardrona areas by permission of adjoining landowner. Permission is required from the Wyuna Station manager for foot access into the western side of the Whakaari block. Permission is also required from Branches Station prior to foot or vehicle access into the Upper Shotover/Sharks Tooth/Lochnagar/Ballarat Creek (via the Floodburn) hunting areas. Woodbine Station and Routeburn Station runholders must be informed prior to hunting in the Kowhai/Kinloch Bush CA. No shooting is permitted within 500 metres of Woodbine Station homestead.

Catlins This permit is not valid for East Catlins (east of Clinton-Mokoreta-Waikawa Road), from 20 March to 20 April (Balloted ROAR block). Access to the Catlins-Maclennan block from the northern side is by permission of the Wisp Run manager. Access from the Tahakopa Valley is on foot and during lambing (20 September to 20 October), by landowner permission only.

Public access to the Serpentine hunting block is via the Long Valley Ridge road; permission is required from Goulburn Station prior to foot or vehicle access for entry to the hunting area from the Upper Manorburn Road to Long Valley Creek.

Takitimu Snowdon Mavora Eyre Mountains No hunting within a 1km radius of the Mavora Lakes from 20 December to 31 January or public holidays. Dogs are permitted in all areas including Mavora Lakes. No dogs in Takitimu or Snowden Forest from 1 September to 30 November. Snowden/Eyres/Takitimu Mountains All dogs to be on a leash or in a crate until well into forest and off private land.

To hunt in restricted areas you need to apply at the relevant issuing office.
Hunting permits for restricted areas are not issued online.

Your obligations

It is your responsibility to:

  • Find out about pesticide use in the area you are hunting in before your trip.
  • Comply in full with the conditions under which the hunting permit is issued.
  • Comply with each area’s special conditions for hunting and the use of dogs.
  • Get permission from any private land owners before you cross their land.
  • Ensure you do not hunt on restricted hunting areas unless you have received separate consent from the relevant DOC issuing office.
  • Carry a hunting permit with you whenever you go hunting on land managed by DOC.
